Opening of LitClub Niharika in Nepal

At the heart of LitWorld are the clubs that give students a chance to experience and share the joy of reading. These clubs, known as LitClubs have been formed all over the world, and now we are proud to finally start one in Nepal also. With a group of 10 girls (Anjana Giri, Binita Tamang, Sadikshya Gautam, Manisha Khattri, Sayuja Acharya, Sailaja Shrestha, Deepika Shrestha, Sashi Chaulagai, Sony Lama and Priti Chawla) and myself (Surabhi Sharma) as co-facilitator.
Girls of the LitClub Niharika are excited to be part of the first LitClub in Nepal.
The club started on February 4th, 2013. All the girls who are the members of the club are currently studying in grades 6 and 7 in Niharika Shishu Kunja High School. The workshop sessions are structured around Lit World’s 7 Strengths or foundational ideas i.e. Belonging, Curiosity, Friendship, Kindness, Confidence, Courage and Hope.

LitWorld believes that these foundation ideas help guide children’s understanding of themselves and their world. The sessions take place in Niharika Shishu Kunja High School every Monday from 8 to 10 in the morning. The main objective of these sessions is to make gradual improvement in reading and writing skills of the girls to make them feel more confident and self-reliant. We have already held 2 successful meetings and are looking forward to more.

I would like to thank LitWorld for giving us this opportunity, and especially to Leah Joseph my trainer for helping me become a facilitator. My work as a Rukmini Foundation Didi (elder sister) has prepared me to help guide these students and I am excited about helping them to improve their reading and writing as well as helping them feel more confident about themselves. I have already seen improvements in the communication skills of my Bahinis (younger sisters) in Pharping because of this kind of program, and I am proud to be able to work with a new group of girls at Niharika. I will updating on the progress of this program through LitWorld’s blogs as well as guest posts on Rukmini Foundation’s blog.
